How did you
react to joining
the Disney family?
I was thrilled and shocked.
I got a call from my agent
out of the blue and at first
didn’t know what it meant
to do Lion King. I thought,
is this a new Disney
Channel cartoon? Is this
Disney on Ice?
Did you talk to
Nathan Lane, who
voiced Timon in
the 1994 movie?
He told me how excited
he was for me and joked,
“What are you going to
do next, The Birdcage
with Ryan Gosling?”
Which, actually, is not a
terrible idea.
Did you work with
Beyoncé?
There isn’t a ton of
overlap. We’re on “Can
You Feel the Love
Tonight?” together, so I
am on a track with
Beyoncé, which is really
bizarre and insanely cool.
I’ve always been a huge
Beyoncé fan—like the rest
of the world.
You’re very outspoken
politically. How do you
feel about reaching a
younger audience?
I think the young people in
this country are going to
save us! They tend to be
the most progressive,
especially with the
LGBTQ community.
If I alienate people,
I don’t care because
those weren’t my people
to begin with. I’m always
going to be me.
