giving back by volunteering at Feeding
America, a hunger-relief organization
My mother was on welfare when I was a little
kid. I understand how important it is to get
help, to be helped and to have people who
care. I got involved with Feeding America a
few years ago when I was looking for a way
to help out on Thanksgiving with my kids
[Sasha, 11, and Kai, 10]. We went to the Bow-
ery Mission and prepped and served meals at
a shelter. My kids wanted to stay longer and do
more. We’ve returned since then, and there’s always
a generosity of spirit that occurs when volunteering that I think is really
magical for kids. One in eight people in America is dealing with hunger.
Feeding America has 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and
meal programs around the country, serving about 46 million Americans
every year—12 million of whom are kids. It’s a pretty extraordinary organi-
zation, and the idea that hunger is an issue in arguably the wealthiest and
greatest nation in the world is a big deal. It means a lot to volunteer your
time, energy and spirit.

Child actress Denise Nickerson was discovered at a fashion show
at age 4, and by 9 she was already a soap star on ABC’s Dark
Shadows. But it was her turn as the pushy, gum-snapping Violet
Beauregarde—who turned into a blueberry after chewing a piece
of experimental gum—in the 1971 Gene Wilder classic Willy
Wonka & the Chocolate Factory that ended up being the biggest
role of her life. By age 21, she quit acting and settled into life as a
receptionist and later an accountant. Married twice, she had a
son, Josh, with her second husband, whom she wed in 1995. In
June 2018 she suffered a major stroke; a year later, on July 8, she
had seizures and was admitted to the ICU with pulmonary
distress. On July 10 she was taken off life support and died at age
