alsointhemostfamousinscribeddocumentoftheperiod,theRes Gestaeof
Augustus(chap.):‘‘filiosmeos,quosiuve[nesm]ihieripuitfortuna’’(my
sons, whom fortune snatched from me in their youth). But the two texts
sharemorethanthat,fortheRes Gestaeitselfissimultaneouslyboth‘‘Augus-
tan’’and‘‘Tiberian.’’Asatext,itisacompositionoftheEmperor’slastyears,
culminating in the award of the designation ‘‘Pater Patriae’’ (father of his
country)in..andcompletedin..(chap.).^14 Butasaninscription
itisTiberian,putupafterAugustus’death(wedonotknowexactlywhen),
attheentrancetotheMausoleum,andthencopied—againwedonotknow
exactlywhen—inprovincialtowns.Allthecopieswhichwehappentohave
comefromAsiaMinor.Itremainsuncertainwhetherlocalcopyingwasspe-
cificallyenjoined,aswenowknowwasthecaseforthetextofthemeasures
passedinRometocommemorateGermanicus.Butthoselattermeasures,re-
vealedbytheTabulaSiarensis,alsoshowthatitwasnotanidleguessonthe
partofZviYavetztosuggestthatatextofthisperiodcelebratingthevirtues
and achievements of a deceased memberof the imperial household might
havebeenspecificallydesignedfortheedificationofthe‘‘youth’’(iuventus)of
thenextandfuturegenerations.ForTiberiusformallystatedtotheSenate
inDecember..thathistestimony(testimonium)toGermanicus’services
wouldbe‘‘utileiuventutiliberorumposterorumquenostrorum’’(usefulfor
theyouthofourchildrenanddescendants).^15 Butthecombinedtextofthe
TabulaSiarensisandthelonger-knownTabulaHebana,convenientlyover-
lappingtoproducelinesofofficialTiberianprose,isalsosimultaneously
‘‘Augustan’’and‘‘Tiberian.’’For,asmentionedearlier,itrehearsesthelegis-
lation put through in.. by the two ordinaryconsuls, adding ten new
centuriestothecenturiateassembly,andusesthatasthemodelfortheaddi-
tionoffivefurthercenturiesinmemoryofGermanicus.Ifalawhadbeen
requiredforthatpreviousenactment,soitwouldbeforthesemeasures.So
theTabulaSiarensisrecordsthattheSenateadvisedtheincomingconsulsof
..tohaveitsvotesincorporatedassoonaspossibleinalawpassedby
the people: ‘‘Utique M. Messalla, M. Aurelius Cotta Maximus, cos. desig-
nati, cum magistratum inissent, primo quoque tempore cum per auspicia
liceret,sinebinumtrinumvenundinumprodictione,legemadpopulumde
honoribusGermaniciCaesarisferendamcurent’’(andthatM.Messallaand
