theSenatevotedthatLuciliusLongusshouldreceiveacensoriumfunus(public
funeralappropriatetoacensor)andastatueintheForumofAugustus,both
atpublicexpense.^17 Thatwasonesignofthere-shapingofthetopography
ofpublicspaceinthecentreofRome.Weseethismuchmoreclearly,how-
ever,atthedeathofL.VolusiusSaturninusin.Tacitus,inrecordingthis,
notes only the good reputation whichVolusius had preserved through his
ninety-threeyears.Butthedamagedinscriptionrecordinghisposthumous
honours, found at the family villa at Lucus Feroniae, reveals a whole new,
oralmostnew,topographyofpublichonour.^18 TheSenatehadvotedapub-
licfuneral,withtheprovisionthatvadimonia(pledgestoappearincourt)for
thatdayshouldbepostponed;thenthereweretobethreetriumphalstatues,
abronzeoneintheForumofAugustus,andtwomarbleonesinthe‘‘new’’
templeofDivusAugustus;alsothree‘‘consular’’statues,oneinthetempleof
DivusIulius,oneinthePalatium,andathirdintheforecourt(area)of(the
templeof)Apollo,withinviewfromtheCuria(meaningwheretheSenate
nowoftenmet,atthetempleofApolloonthePalatine);next,therewasto
beastatueofhiminauguraldressattheRegia;thenamountedstatuenear
theRostra;andfinallyoneofhimseatedonhisofficialseat,tobeplacedin
thePorticooftheLentuli,besidethetheatreofPompey.
Almostallthearchitecturalfeaturesmentionedhadcomeintoexistence
intheprevioushundredyears.Norisitthecasethat,aswemightexpect,
thesenewmonumentalelementswerejustthat,withnosignificanceforthe
operationsofsocietyorgovernment.Theoppositeisshownbyunexpected
evidence,namelythewaxtabletsfromMurecinerecordingbusinessaffairs
at Puteoli in the middle of the first century.. Now properlyedited by
G.Camodeca,thesedocumentsrecordawholeseriesofvadimoniagivenby
parties to legal proceedings who are due to go to Rome to appear before
