to the invitational experience
and enjoy racing with Benzie
Central, Onekema, Maple City
Glenn Lake and Grand Rapids
Christian - which is a pretty
tough field of teams.
“Grand Rapids Christian
qualified both of its teams for
the State Finals and there were
a bunch of State Finals
Individual qualifiers on the
teams that attended the race.
Our main goal was to make
sure that everyone’s JV or B
Teams has one more chance to
race and we were successful.”
The Grand Rapids Christian
girls and Onekema boys took
championships at the meet.
The Caledonia boys were sec-
ond, just two points behind the
Onekema boys, 63-65.
VanDemark tuned up for
the state finals by winning
both the girls’ events. She had
runs of 20.66 seconds and
20.72 in the giant slalom. Her
total time was more than two
seconds better than that of
Grand Rapids Christian’s
Anna Angell who was the
runner-up in the event.
VanDemark won the slalom
with runs of 30.12 and 32.37.
Grand Rapids Christian’s
Annelise Kuiper matched her
that second run down the hill,
but had a time of 30.66 on her
first trip down the slalom
course and finished second.
Grand Rapids Christian had
girls place second, third and
fourth in the slalom and sec-
ond, fourth and fifth in the GS.
The Eagles won the girls’
competition with just 35
points. Benzie was second
with 83 ahead of Plainwell/TK
106, Onekema 138, Caledonia
152 and Glen Lake NTS.
Grand Rapids Christian was
third in the boys’ standings
with 74 points, ahead of
Plainwell/TK 148, Glen Lake
NTS and Benzie NTS.
It was a great start for the
Caledonia boys at the meet.
They won the GS competition
with just 23 points. Sean Rice
was second, Tyler Dean
fourth, Brayden Smith sixth
and DJ Potgeter 11th. The
Scots also had Luke Shuster
place 14th. The top 15 in each
event earned medals at the
race, whether their score was
added to their team tally for a
top four team finish or not.
Rice had times of 20.22 and
20.52 in his two GS runs. The
only guy faster was Onekema’s
Brayden Sorenson who had
times of 19.16 and 19.27.
Sorensen also had the two
fastest slalom runs of the day
with times of 25.25 and 27.17.
Even though the Scots had a
couple minor hiccups in the
slalom, they skied well enough
to finish the meet in second
place and only two points
behind Onekema and ahead of
State Finals bound Grand
Rapids Christian.
“Today was the first time
we have beaten Grand Rapids
Christian with the boys’
team,” Petrosky said. “We
have been close a few times,
but they have a great team and
program, who we race with in
our middle school conference
and throughout the year in our
high school schedule. I am
very proud of how well we
skied today - these guys left
everything on the slopes today
and did not hold back at all.”
The Caledonia team had its
top three earn medals in the
slalom. Dean was fourth,
Smith ninth and Shuster 11th.
Rice added an 18th-place time
for the Scots. Dean had times
of 29.43 and 31.53 on his two
runs at the slalom course.
Eli Korreck earned medals
in both events for the
Plainwell/TK team. He was
13 th in the GS and 14th in the
slalom. He had times of 21.
and 22.33 in the GS and 33.
and 34.85 in the slalom.
Sam Bacon wasn’t far
behind in the GS for Plainwell/
TK. He placed 18th in that
even. Colin Gritter was 21st
for the Trojans and Gerrit
Taber 26th.
Those three were all among
the top four for the Trojan
team in the slalom too. Gritter
placed 25th, Bacon 27th and
Taber 28th.
VanDemark was one of two
Plainwell/TK girls to medal in
both events. Whitney Johnson
placed ninth in the GS and
then added a 13th-place finish
in the slalom.
The Trojan team also had
Clem Murzyn 18th and Kaitlyn
Hodges 29th in the GS.
In the slalom, the Trojan
team had Lilly Warnez place
18th and Anna Davis place
27th.
Caledonia had Mya Baldwin
earn two medals on the girls’
side. She was 11th in the sla-
lom and tied for 13th in the GS
with teammate Kyleigh
Thompson. Thompson added a
22nd-place finish in the slalom.
Also scoring for the CHS
girls were Liz Hilton 20th in
the GS and 21st in the slalom,
Erin Peckham 24th in the GS
and Jessica Maier 27th in the
slalom.
“Our girls really did well
and I think the momentum
will carry into the off season
and help these athletes estab-
lish some great goals for next
season,” Petrosky said.
