had a smart makeover, with
recognisable brands and a
more professional approach
to the business. But sheffield
in the twenties saw both
highs and lows, and in order
to survive, shops had to adapt
to customers’ changing
circumstances. from affluence
to poverty, the grocer’s life
still involved plenty of hard
graft — there was no such
thing as convenience
in this era.
