E-bike rider

cleared over

crash death

AN electric bike rider wept
in the dock as he was
cleared of killing a pedes-
trian by careless driving.
Thomas Hanlon, 32, was
going more than 10mph
over the 20mph limit in
Dalston, East London,
before he knocked down
Sakine Cihan, the Old
Bailey heard.
Ms Cihan, 56, died the
next day as a result of a
“catastrophic” head injury.
It is believed to be the
first death of a pedestrian
after a collision with an
e-bike in the UK.
The court was told the
bike had a motor which
allowed it to travel twice
the legal limit of 15.5mph.
Ms Cihan had crossed
the road despite the lights
being green, jurors heard.
Hanlon, of Hackney, had
said: “She rushed out in
front of me to cross and
she didn’t even look at me.”

Greek coastguards ‘try to capsize

migrant inflatable’ as boy drowns

GREEK coastguards appeared to push
back a migrant dinghy with poles in
film which emerged after a boy of four
drowned when an boat capsized
carrying migrants from Turkey.
The Syrian boy died in the early hours
yesterday, becoming the first victim of the
migrant crisis prompted by Turkey’s deci-
sion to declare its borders open.
He was one of two children taken to
hospital from the capsized dinghy, from
which 46 people were rescued off the
Greek island of Lesbos.
Another boat with about
30 Afghans arrived on
Lesbos and 32 others
were rescued off
another island.
B u t o t h e r
migrants had to
return to the
Turkish shore.
Footage appeared
to show coast-
guards pushing
back an inflatable
raft off the coast of
Bodrum, Turkey.
Screams can be heard
as the dinghy is almost
rammed by a coastguard vessel
speeding directly in front. A
smaller boat then
approaches, from which
officers lash out at the
migrants with long poles.
Armed officers patrol
the deck of the larger
vessel as the clash
continues.
