■■I agree with Gill Albrow who
said our country needs skilled
workers (Your Voice, Feb 27).
But does the answer lie with
training up our own?
Could it be possible to
‘stream’ schoolchildren
selecting them for suitable
professions in their last years
of education and train them
accordingly?
Bringing in skilled labour
from abroad has more
disadvantages than
advantages.
And after all, we left the EU
to be more independent.
Brian Stubbings, Cambridge
■■Forget plans to build on
flood plains (Mirror, Feb 28),
I fear Britain will eventually
disappear as it’s overpowered
by the weather and the sea.
You only have to look at the
erosion taking place on the
North Yorkshire and Norfolk
coasts to see how bad it is.
I live on the Furness
Peninsula in Cumbria and
we also suffer from coastal
erosion.
Britain is in dire straits as
the sea and flooding is
overtaking the land at a rapid
rate.

Pub quiz answers
Yes. Privatisation was never
going to work and Chris
Grayling was told this over
and over again. The cost in
lives lost and financially has
been enormous.

Yes. The privatisation
of probation services
has been a total
disaster. Even the
Government admits it.
CrazyHippie
No. The
Government can’t
do everything at
once. This is on
their agenda.
pHilip parker
Yes. Can anyone name any
privatised organisation that was
once nationalised that actually
works in the interests of the people?
reduNderTHeBed
No. This is less about
government policies
and more about our soft
justice system that lets
out dangerous criminals
half way through
their sentences.

die before probation is
brought back into
public hands?

■ eaths from this outbreak so far D
are a long way short of those from
a typical flu season both in the UK
and globally.
In the UK, on average, there are
around 600 flu deaths a season and
in some years more than 10,000 –
worldwide there are 291,000-
646,000.
Currently, there are around 3,000
deaths globally from coronavirus,
mostly among the elderly or other-
wise vulnerable, so we’re nowhere
near even an average flu outbreak.
Obviously, this is tragic for those
affected and we need to take
sensible precautions, but we also
need to keep a sense of proportion.
Gordon Pilkington, Epsom, Surrey
■ When I had the Asian flu, I was
told to stay in bed at home. That’s
presumably how they would
handle the coronavirus if it did
threaten to overwhelm the NHS.
If a serious outbreak were to
happen, all it would need is some
sort of volunteer-based supervi-
sion and supply provision until a
vaccine is developed.
As this is a global
problem, there should
be co-operation on
medical research, and
the price of drugs
must not be set by greedy pharma-
ceutical companies.
John Shale, Wigan, Gtr Manchester
■ he Government’s advice to T
work from home is ridiculous.
What about construction and
factory workers or any job which
involves manual labour?
Many are self-employed or on
zero-hours contracts and cannot
afford to lose a day’s pay.
Mick Smith, Tilbury, Essex
■ With regard to the possible
spread of the coronavirus, consider
how many banknotes change
hands in the course of a day –
think supermarkets, airports,
betting shops etc – I fear the worst
is yet to come. God help us!
Alan Cragg, Preesall, Lancs
■ I remember the 1995 film
Outbreak in which a lethal virus –
for years safely contained in the
African rain forest – threatens
humankind.
I do worry that something
similar could be about to happen.

■ Why has Boris Johnson’s Govern-
ment left it until now to hold the
first emergency meeting on
containing the spread of the coro-
navirus in the UK?
Maybe it’s because he was too
busy trying to repair the damage to
his reputation for not doing
enough for all the flood victims
who have lost their homes, many
of whom voted for him.
What a muddled response from
our hopeless Prime Minister to
what is turning into a global
epidemic.
Perhaps we should all expect the
worst because he – along with
Health Secretary Matt Hancock –
is completely out of his depth,
while our NHS is already over-
stretched and struggling. I wonder
how many who voted for him have
now washed their hands of him.
Reg Barrett, Southminster, Essex
■ Our PM has been more
concerned with his personal life
than the worldwide coronavirus
epidemic, which is fast becoming
a national emergency.
It is only by sheer luck that the
virus has so far not got out of hand
in this country.
Could it be that now the
stock market has been hit by
the spread of this disease our
lazy PM has been spurred to
action? That’s all he and
his millionaire cronies
care about.
For heaven’s sake, Boris,
let’s see a proper plan of
what the Government
intends to do to stop the
spread of this virus.
Grahame Kennedy
Wirral, Merseyside
As more new cases of coronavirus are
confirmed in Britain, taking the number of
those now infected to 40, Boris Johnson
has chaired his first COBRA meeting on
the disease. More than 3,000 people have
died from the virus around the world,
including 41 in northern Italy. You say...

Figures revealed 309 people have beeen
murdered by monitored offenders since
the probation service was part-privatised
in 2014. It’s due to be brought back into
the public sector in December.
Should the probation
service be under
government control?
