semantic relations in its predicative functions. For has both causative and
purposive functions, defined as clause linkage relationships in the ISRH
(see Figure 1). The causative relation, occurring in predicative usages only,
is specified as for' and will not be discussed further. Purposive for which has
both predicative and non-predicative functions, is decomposed in section
2.7.1, but will be specified as PURP in LS for convenience.
2.7.1 Purposive for: class three functions
The purposive functions of predicative for are far more pervasive in current
usage than the causative. Sentence (68) illustrates the most basic predica
tive function where for, in an activity context, introduces an NP having an
implicit clausal interpretation. The purposive function of for has two
semantic components, as illustrated in the LS in (68b): a desired outcome
(in this case, fun) and an activity undertaken by the Actor to achieve that
outcome {Rita sings).
(68) a. Rita sings for fun.
b. [sing' (Rita)] PURP [BECOME have-fun' (Rita)]
The fully elaborated LS for (68), including all components of PURP, is
specified in (68c).
(68) [want' (Rita, [BECOME have-fun' (Rita)])] & [DO (Rita,
[sing' (Rita)])] CAUSE [BECOME have-fun' (Rita)]
Thus, PURP specifies two structures: (1) [want' (x, LS 2 )] where, in this
context, χ = Rita and LS 2 = [BECOME have-fun' (Rita)]; and (2) [LS1
CAUSE LS 2 ], where LS1 = [DO (Rita, [sing' (Rita)])].^17 All predicative
uses of purposive for will assume these two structures, implied in the
specification of PURP. In the LSs to follow, wherein purposive for occurs
predicatively, we will specify only PURP. This abbreviation of semantic
content is introduced for notational convenience and to avoid confusing the
second structure, [LSj CAUSE LS 2 ], with CAUSE structures in
accomplishment contexts. Were we to attempt full specification of all
PURP components in all purposive contexts, the LS for an accomplishment
sentence such as (69) would be unnecessarily complicated.
(69) a. Rita ran to the store for exercise.
b. [[run' (Rita)])] CAUSE [BECOME be-at' (store, Rita)]]
PURP [exercise' (Rita)]
Thus, we can specify a basic PURP structure for for in generalized activity
