Semi-structured observation

During the research project, observation was conducted in ten BA (QTS)
lectures, four PGCE (Secondary) lectures, two BA Childhood Studies lectures
and three FdA lectures. Purposive sampling was used to select the lectures
for observation. They were chosen as examples of a variety of courses and
subjects taught in a bilingual setting. A total of 10 lecturers and 184 students
were observed. The observations were carried out by the project’s principal
researcher, with the exception of one lecture which was co-observed by a
second researcher. Two lectures were filmed and, in all other cases, the lec-
ture was recorded using a written observation schedule. Investigating various
