event of the month - at least for Charles and
Camilla. What will the rest of us be doing
during the £100 million event? Some will be
on Calton Hill protesting against the
monarchy. Some have booked holidays
creating a ten day break using only four days
leave. Will you be watching from a bar in
Spain or at a Coronation street party?
Do let us know if you are organising any
Coronation events, although we have looked
we have not found very many in Edinburgh
as we go to press.
It was very sad to report the death of
boxer Ken Buchanan, MBE, at the beginning
of last month. Buchanan received the 2016
Edinburgh Award from then Lord Provost
Donald Wilson, and his handprints are
immortalised in a flagstone in the Quad at
the City Chambers. His funeral was held at
St Giles’, and Nigel Duncan who has written
an obituary for us on page 10 has also
written an account of the day which you will
find online. Nigel writes that the boxing
legend “would have loved this” referring to
the funeral ceremony held in the same
church as Her Majesty the late Queen lay at
rest last September. It was only last August
that a statue of the champion boxer was
finally unveiled in a temporary position
on Little King Street. Some critics believe
that he was not given due credit for his
amazingly successful sporting career
during his lifetime.
We do not have local elections this
month as there are in England. For the
moment the main political wrangling
appears to be at Holyrood, and Una Purdie
has written an update of recent events.
The story of the SNP’s apparent fall from
grace is far from over.
Juliet has written her final food column for
us this month as she heads off for the relative
calm of the Borders on her next food related
adventure. Read more on page 17. Our new
food columnist is already sitting down at the
table to bring you the newest and the tastiest
places in town to eat and drink.
Finally in sport while we have news of the
two capital football teams we also stray into
women’s rugby where Scotland have had a
degree of success.
I hope you enjoy the extra holidays this
month will bring.

Planning News
Work is progressing at Currie Community
High School where Kier Construction are
building the Passivhaus energy standard
replacement school designed by Architype.
This will be an ultra low energy community
high school with a swimming pool and sports
facilities. The existing school is to be
demolished.The purpose built student accommodation
at Yeaman Place Lane was approved by
councillors after final design changes to the
pedestrian and cycle routes. This development
will contain 148 student bedrooms in 4 blocks
and is designed by Fletcher Joseph.A revised application has been made by
3DReid for the Dockside development - which
already has planning permission. This is on
Ocean Drive and the revisals include improved
landscaping, reduction of car parking and
significant revisions to Block A including
adding a further five storeys and 42 Buy to
Rent flats, new facades and a commercial unit
on Ocean Drive. The number of homes will
increase to 380 if approved.Seafield Regeneration - Community
Consultation Stage 1 has been launched onthe council website and runs until 8 June.

said: “This part of our precious coast in
Edinburgh has been highlighted as an area
which can be greatly improved and
regenerated in our draft City Plan 2030.“We’re at an early stage looking at how we
can use sustainable 20-minute principles at
Seafield, a new way of thinking for us in
Edinburgh. It’s really important we hear from
as many people as possible about this
