y kitchen garden is a metaphor for our community. The soil is like a
gathering place; the seeds are words we use to communicate. Th e wiser
the words, the better we grow to understand what is true, and it is shared
truth that governs the actions that can lead to a peaceful community.

All my adult life I’ve tried to sow a few good words to encourage my neigh
suit of happiness by way of countless diver
sions have limited the time we seem
prepared to spend with one another
over the family dinner table. I didn’t
see this from some kind of ivory
tower; it surrounded me, as I too was
swept along in a mud slide of com
mercial opportunism.
I really wanted out, and struggled
