Anthony Grimm’s junior year
wasn’t supposed to be this chal-
lenging. One of the top high
school swimmers in the country,
with an Olympic trials cut time in
the 100 -meter backstroke, the
reigning All-Met Swimmer of the
Year planned to build on a spar-
kling season for Oakton while
cementing his plan for college.
But when he announced his
commitment to the University of
Te xas on Oct. 22, flashing the
school’s iconic “Hook ’em” hand
symbol in an Instagram post,
Grimm wasn’t completely right
physically. His back was sore, and
in mid-November it worsened at
a meet. The results of an MRI
exam were sobering: He had a
stress fracture and would need to
avoid physical activity for two
months.
“That was really tough for me,
just more so mentally, honestly,”
Grimm said. “I can just swim
away most of my problems, most
of the stuff going on in my life.”
After a couple of discouraging,
stagnant months, Grimm has
gradually worked his way back to
his lofty level.
In his return to the pool, at the
Concorde District champion-
ships in January, he won the
50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
On Saturday, in Oakton’s first-
place finish at the Virginia Re-
gion D meet, he made another
positive push, qualifying for this
weekend’s Virginia High School
League state meet in four events.
Oakton Coach Parker Ramsdell
said Grimm will compete at the
50 free and 100 breaststroke Sat-
urday.
At last year’s state meet, he set
a Virginia record in the freestyle
while leading Oakton to a team
title. Leading up to this year’s
meet, his biggest since his injury,
Grimm said he isn’t worried
about beating records or protect-
ing titles.
“There have been times where I
did feel like I need kind of a
mental break just because it’s a
lot of pressure from myself and
from other people,” Grimm said.
“But at the end of the day, it helps
me a lot. I love doing it. And so I’m
going to stick to it, no matter
what.”
Grimm has been swimming
competitively since age 4, when
on a trip to a local pool his mother
noticed an ongoing meet and
enrolled him just for fun.
He swam for club teams grow-
ing up and realized his talent was
special during his freshman year
of high school, when his times
dropped and he started to pass
competitors he had never caught.
Last year, he became the first
swimmer in Virginia to complete
the 50 in less than 20 seconds
(19.67). He was a National Inter-
scholastic Swim Coaches Associa-
tion all-American.
Grimm estimates he spends
15 hours a week in the pool,
waking up at 4 a.m. for practice
before class. Though the schedule
can take a toll, swimming is ca-
thartic for Grimm, who can leave
his problems in the water. After
his injury, under doctor’s orders
to rest, he had to find other
outlets.
Grimm passed the time doing
homework and taking naps, but
Ramsdell made sure he stayed a
part of the team. He ran starts for
his teammates at every meet,
helping them mount the block
and practice launching into the
water, and he attended weekly
Thursday night pasta dinners.
Ramsdell tried to reinforce the
type of mind-set Grimm needed
to have both in his recovery and
once he got back in the water —
that he could only control what he
could control.
Grimm struggled to watch
from the sideline while friends
excelled in the pool. But he re-
turned in time for the postseason
and can salvage what has been a
frustrating junior season.
“It’s really, really hard on me
just seeing all my teammates
swim,” he said. “A nd of course,
physically getting back into it
now, I’m not really as strong as I
was. But it’s getting better every
day. I’m trying to just work my
way back into it.”
