FOX SHOWCASE
HBO drama Big Little Lies was
essential viewing when it hit our
screens in 2017. With its all-star
cast and glorious Californian
beachside backdrop, it offered
a peek inside the lives (and
luxury homes) of the women
of Monterey, examining their
friendships, fights and family
issues. It was also unflinching in
its portrayal of bigger themes –
most notably the abuse Celeste
Wright (Nicole Kidman) suffered
at the hands of husband Perry
(Alexander Skarsgård).
Season one (and the novel it’s
based on, by Australian author
Liane Moriarty) ended with his
death. But, as the awards stacked
up, a second season was locked
in and, next month, we discover
what unfolds. Kidman says the
“enormous demand” from viewers
for more was overwhelming.
“I’d never been in something
that reached so far globally,
and that was such a compelling
idea,” she explains. “The chance
of putting it together again... was
very much generated by the
audience and the desire to see
these people still in existence.”
The close-knit cast – including
Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern
(pictured from left with Kidman,
centre), Zoë Kravitz and Shailene
Woodley – were happy to oblige.
“We had such a good time
doing it and the desire to spend
more time together was a huge
part of it,” adds Kidman.
