In building
their boathouse
on Lake Ros-
seau in Port
Carling, On-
tario, a young
couple knew
what they
didn’t want.
“They were
adamant that it wasn’t to be all
white,” says Kristine Brigden,
owner of North Muskoka House,
a design firm in the Muskoka re-
gion. Instead, the couple wanted
a traditional nautical look that
wasn’t kitschy and featured a lot
of natural wood. “The barrel
ceiling and walls are cedar; the
floors are hemlock,” she says.
The result is what Ms. Brigden
calls elegant nautical. “It’s time-
less. You could change out the
furniture and other décor and it
would still look good.”
The couple—he’s a real-estate
developer and she’s a full-time
mom who is active in philan-
thropy—have three children
with busy schedules. When they
come to the lake, the family
chills.
Overall, the three-level boat-
house measures about 2,000
square feet, including decking.
The main-level living area in-
cludes a kitchenette, seating
area, bathroom and master bed-
room. A loft, accessed with a
ladder, is where the children or
other guests stay.
The boathouse took about a
year to construct in 2012-2013,
Ms. Bridgen adds. She estimates
that the design plans and décor
for the project cost between
$86,600 and $101,000. Here is a
breakdown of the retail prices
paid at the time the products
were purchased.
