Akiko Lame
Lame and her
husband, a Navy
officer, relied on
support from the
U.S. government’s
WIC food program
during the four
years they were
stationed in Japan.
They no longer
needed assistance
when they moved
back to the States
in 2017, but when
a friend asked
Lame whether she
wanted to help fel-
low military fami-
lies by volunteering
at Feeding San Di-
ego, she said yes.
For the past year,
she has been work-
ing there at least
once a week. “I’m
very happy to be
with them, helping
the people,” she
says. “Everybody
says thank you.”
