Intheprocessofgradually
restoringtheirbeautifulmid-century
modernhometoitsformerglory(witha few
contemporaryupdates),thiscouplemadesome
boldcolourchoicesthatcouldhaverisked
lookinggarishbutinsteadfeelvibrant and age-
appropriatefortheir 1965 house.
Thecouplearedelightedwiththeirwinand
theprizeof$5000towardstheirnextcolourful

WewerelivinginBayswateronAuckland’sNorth
ShoreandmovedtoHawke’sBayin2015.Wewere
outgrowingourbelovedcottageandAndrewwas
readyfora careermove.Weconsideredallsortsof
possibilities,froma differenthouseinthesame
suburbtoopportunitiesinSingaporeandthe
MiddleEast,butintheendAndrewdecidedhejust
wantedthechildrentohave a similar upbringing
totheonehe’dhad.
Whatdidyoulikeaboutyourhousewhenyou
purchasedit?Wearebigfansofmodernist
architectureandfellinlovewiththe 1965 build.The
housesitsinharmonywithitsenvironmentandhas
a subtleasymmetry.It wasdesignedtobringthe
outdoorsin,withitshigh, open, beamed ceilings and
transomwindows.
Thehouseis setontopofa hillsoit combinesa
wonderfulflatsiteforthechildrentoplayon,witha
lovelyoutlook.Thepreviousownershadcreateda
beautifulgardenthat,albeitexpansive,is easyto
maintain.Theremaininglandis maintainedbythe
neighbours’sheep.It’sfiveminutestoschooland 10
minutestotownsoasfaraslifestyleblocksgo,it
offered this city kid the best of both worlds.
