cornered,itssol-dierswillfight

morefiercely.
Itissometimesbetter,then,
toleavetheman
escape
route,a
wayoutAsthey
retreat,they
wearthemselves
out,andareultimately
moredemoralized
bythe
retreatthanbyany
defeat
hemight
inflictonthebattlefield.When
youhavesomeoneonthe
ropes,then——-but
onlywhen
youaresurethey
havenochanceof
recovery--youmight
letthemhang
themselves.Letthembethe
agentsoftheirownde-struction.Theresultwillbethe
same,and
youwon‘t
feelhalfasbad.Finally,
sometimesbycrushing
an
enemy,youembitterthemsomuchthattheyspend
yearsand
yearsplottingrevenge.TheTreaty
ofVersailleshadsuchaneffectontheGermans.Somewould
arguethatinthe
longrunitwouldbebettertoshowsomeleniency.
Theproblem
is,
yourleniency
involvesanothern'sk—it
mayemboldenthe
enemy,whichstillharborsa"grudge,
butnowhassomeroomtooperate.
Itisalmostalways
wisertocrush
your
enemy.Ifthey
plotrevengeyears
later,
donotletyourguard
down,butsimply
crushthem
