HOW MUCH
DOES IT COST TO
CHARGE AN EV?
GENERALLYSPEAKING, EVdrivers tendto save about50 percent on fuelcosts comparedwith gasoline models. Basedon national averages, theycan expect to pay about 3 to4 cents per mile comparedwith 5 to 30 cents for gasoline, says Ronald Kaltenbaugh, president of the ElectricVehicle Association of GreaterWashington, D.C. A typicalgas-powered vehicle, such asthe Toyota RAV4, would useabout 3⅓ gallons of gas to go100 miles. If gas costs $2.54 pergallon (the average price in theU.S. during one week in January, according to AAA), the Toyotaowner would spend $8.47 to go100 miles. Assuming that EVenergy costs are 11 cents perkilowatt hour, and that it takes34 kWh to generate 100 miles ofdriving range, the cost of homecharging is less than half theprice of gasoline, according tothe Department of Energy.Of course, prices depend onwhere you plug in and localYour EV
