12 SCHIMPFEN IM BERUF Business Spotlight

What bullshit!

Many swear words come from a taboo subject in most

languages: bodily functions. A lot of them are used to

show that we don’t believe something or someone — or to

express real anger. Again, we list some polite alternatives.

Strong
Sue: That’s bullshit and they
know it. I wish they’d
get their shit together!
Andy: I agree.
Sue: Why can’t they just cut
the crap and be honest
with us?

Strong
Jon: We’re in deep shit.
Louis says they won’t
pay for the delivery.
Angie: You’re shitting me!
That will destroy us.
Jon: No shit, Sherlock!
Angie: Well, I don’t need this
crap. I’m calling his
boss.

Mild
Brian: You’re kidding me!
He really expects us to
work this weekend?
Lucy: He does. He says we all
need to be here.
Brian: Well, that’s nonsense!
I’ll call him now.

False friend
Mist is regarded as a fairly
mild swear word in German.
But don’t use it in English, as
it means Nebel. If you want to
use something similar, try the
following:

  • So ein Mist! — Bummer! /
    What a bummer!

  • Mist! Ich habe seinen Namen
    vergessen! — Damn! I’ve for-
    gotten his name!

  • Er redet Mist. — He’s talking
    crap/nonsense/rubbish.
