Note that citronellol, geraniol, and nerol have similar molecular
shapes: each is a linear chain of eight carbons, with one or two double
bonds, two methyl (-CH3) side groups, and a hydroxy (-OH) group
on one end. Different varieties of roses smell differently because they
have different relative amounts of these and the many other mole-
cules making up their aromatic essential oil.
Another wonderfully aromatic flower is jasmine (genus Jasminum),
represented by many species. Jasmine has a characteristic aroma, and
like other floral aromas, it derives from a mixture of molecules, such
as benzyl acetate, indole, and farnesene.

Different species of jasmine flowers have slightly or even significantly
different aromatic qualities, related to the varied chemical compo-
