Notes
This list of notes and references is not meant to be comprehensive.
Included are a few articles and books I have found particularly inter-
esting—good places to seek additional insights, as well as to see some
of the work of the pioneers.
Chapter 1
The modern discovery of the Chauvet Cave told by its three discoverers:
Chauvet, Deschamps, and Hillaire (1996). The book has many beautiful
photographs of the art within the cave. Filmmaker Werner Herzog has made
an excellent documentary film on Chauvet Cave: Cave of Forgotten Dreams
(2010). A spectacular collection of photographs of cave art is by Clottes
(2008).
Exploration of the role of shamanism and altered states of consciousness
as contributors to Paleolithic cave paintings: Clottes and Lewis-Williams
(1998) and Lewis-Williams (2002).
Hominin evolution: Pontzer (2012) and White et al. (2009).
Classic essay on consciousness and the experience of “what is like to be”:
Nagel (1974).
