nWILLIE MULLINS-trained Cilaos Emery was
the only horse supplemented to the
Champion Hurdle field at yesterday’s
penultimate declaration stage at a cost of
£22,500. The eight-year-old successfully
switched back to hurdles for his last run after
falling over fences behind stablemate Chacun
Pour Soi in the Dublin Chase on his previous
start. Cilaos Emery is a 13-2 shot.
nSANDOWN will inspect at 8am today to see if
Friday’s meeting can go ahead, with parts of
the track waterlogged.
nFLAT jockey Rab Havlin registered his 1,000th
career winner when Pitcher’s Point landed the
Ladbrokes Where The Nation Plays Novice
Stakes at Lingfield yesterday.

SEVEN teams yesterday threatened
to take Ferrari and the FIA to court
for hushing up a potentially illegal
Ferrari engine, in the sport’s biggest
‘cheating’ storm in a decade.
In an unprecedented affront to the
FIA’s authority, all the non-Ferrari
supplied competitors — including
Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes team,
Red Bull and McLaren — issued
identical statements at precisely
10am in a rare show of solidarity.
Sportsmail understands that the
disgruntled ‘Gang of Seven’ also
submitted a long list of questions to
the FIA. At the heart of the dispute is
the legality of Ferrari’s engine last
season and the FIA’s investigation
into the potential breach of fuel-flow
pressure that
seemingly gave
drivers Sebastian
Vettel (right) and
Charles Leclerc a
straight-line
advantage. It
came to a head
last week when
the FIA issued a
statement saying
they had investigated and ‘reached
an agreement (with Ferrari),’
adding: ‘The specifics of the
agreement will remain between the
parties.’ This lack of transparency —
and the timing of the notification,
when F1 personnel were leaving
pre-season testing in Barcelona —
led to yesterday’s detonation ahead
of the new campaign, which begins
in Melbourne a week on Sunday.
The ‘Gang of Seven’ said: ‘We were
surprised and shocked by the FIA’s
statement regarding the conclusion
of its investigation into Ferrari’s
power unit. An international
sporting regulator has the
responsibility to act with the highest
standards of governance, integrity
and transparency. After months of
investigations undertaken by the FIA
only following queries raised by
other teams, we strongly object to
the FIA reaching a confidential
settlement agreement with Ferrari.
‘We hereby state publicly our shared
commitment to pursue full and
proper disclosure, to ensure that
our sport treats all competitors
fairly and equally. In addition, we
reserve our rights to seek legal
redress, within the FIA’s due process
and before the competent courts.’
Ferrari denied all accusations.

I FEARED

FOR MY

LIFE

Jack Leach

on his sepsis horror

J

ack LEacH has
revealed he feared
for his life when he
contracted sepsis in
New Zealand earlier
this winter.
Leach has endured a trau-
matic time since his support-
ing role in the ashes miracle of
Headingley alongside Ben
S t o k e s , s u f f e r i n g s e r i o u s
illness in both New Zealand
and South africa.
But having made a full recov-
ery, the left-arm spinner now
has a calf injury and admits he
faces a battle to be fit for the
two-Test series in Sri Lanka,
where he would be a key figure
in the absence of Moeen ali
and adil Rashid.
For now, he is just thankful
to be in colombo working on
his fitness before the first
of two warm-up games on
Saturday. The illnesses that
r u i n e d h i s t o u r s o f N e w
Zealand and South africa
could have had far more
serious consequences.
‘I didn’t know too much
about it at the time, how
serious it could be, but I
remember feeling very, very ill,’
said Leach yesterday of the
sepsis he picked up before the

s e c o n d Te s t i n H a m i l t o n
before christmas. ‘I remember
thinking, “Don’t fall asleep
because you might not wake
up”. It was that serious in
terms of how I was feeling.
‘I was out of it really. My
blood pressure was dropping
quickly, my heart-rate was 190
and my temperature was 40
degrees. That’s when they
called an ambulance and got
me to hospital.
‘Once I got there, got the
antibiotics in my arm and on
to a drip, I started to feel
better quite quickly. But it
still took a couple of nights in
hospital and I was probably
still recovering when I flew
back from New Zealand. It
took longer to get over than
I thought.’
There were more repercus-
sions for Leach, who suffers
from crohn’s disease, when flu
and stomach viruses swept
through the England camp
when they arrived in South

africa ahead of the first Test in
centurion on Boxing Day.
‘I picked up a couple of things
out there and my body couldn’t
cope,’ said the 28-year- old.
‘Other people got ill but I
struggled to shake it off as well
as a healthy person.
‘The medication I’m on for
crohn’s weakens my immune
system, so it’s a bit more of a
struggle. You can start
to feel fine in general
but playing high
level sport is a
completely differ-
ent thing. That’s
probably some-
thing I didn’t
think through
enough.’
The problems
have left Leach,
who flew home from
South africa without
playing a Test in the
3-1 victory, more sensitive
than most to the threat of
coronavirus. ‘I’ve been nervous
in England but I feel fine here,’
he said.
‘I’ve come to a safer place. I
g u e s s I a m a b i t m o r e
concerned than others. These
things affect the older genera-
tion more but, with my medica-
tion, my immune system may

be similar to them. We’ve been
given packs to use with wipes
and hand sanitisers and we’re
drinking bottled water. I just
have to do the right things and
keep my fingers crossed.’
Leach is now trying to recover
from the calf problem picked
up in training at home that was
revealed by Sportsmail last
week. That could threaten his
chances of replicating his
productive tour of Sri
Lanka in 2018 when
he formed a potent
threat with Moeen
and Rashid.
‘I’m still a little
bit off but we’ve
got a bit of time,’
a d d e d L e a c h.
‘The main part of
the tour is the two
Tests and I’ll be
doing everything I can
to get back for them.’
The absence of Leach would
lea ve Engla nd relying o n
his Somerset team-mate Dom
Bess and the raw Matt Parkin-
son — yet to play in a Test —
for specialist spin in a country
w h e r e s u c h a n a t t a c k i s
integral if England are to gain
the 120 World championship
points up for grabs in this
mini-series.
