DVF Awards
Washington, D.C., Feb. 19
Unity Championed
“You don’t have to worry
if the Oscars are so white
or not — it doesn’t matter
because here we are all
celebrating each other,”
said Harold Perrineau,
who won best supporting
actor in a drama series for
his role on TNT’s Claws, at
the NAACP Image Awards.
Held at the Pasadena
Convention Center, the
51st annual awards recog-
nized the achievements of
people of color and those
who promote social justice
in TV, music, literature
and film. The night’s big
winners included host
Anthony Anderson as
Black-ish dominated the
TV awards; Lizzo (2), who
took home entertainer of
the year; Just Mercy, which
nabbed best film as well as
actor and supporting actor
for Michael B. Jordan (9)
and Jamie Foxx, respec-
tively; and Lupita Nyong’o,
who won best actress
for Us. Other highlights
included a tribute to
Kobe Bryant ahead of
his Feb. 24 public Staples
Center memorial, plus hon-
ors for Congressman John
Lewis and Rihanna (4),
who received a standing
ovation. “If there’s anything
I’ve learned, it’s that we
can fix this world together,”
she said. “We can’t do it
divided.” — ALEX CRAMER

For the first time, the DVF
Awards took place at the
Library of Congress, to
ensure that the evening’s
recipient of the Lifetime
Leadership Award, Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (17),
could be present. “In
my long life, I have seen
great changes,” Ginsburg
said during an onstage
conversation after an
introduction by Hillary
Clinton (13). “That’s what
makes me an optimist for
the future.” She added
that the biggest obstacle
to gender equality has
been the bias that persists.
Other honorees included
supermodel Iman (15),
plus Priti Patkar (16) and
Saskia Niño de Rivera
for their efforts in India
and Mexico, respectively.
