finalmatch between China and

the UnitedStatesat the 2009

worldteamchampionship.

The biddingshowntookplace

when a Chinese pair held the

North-South cards. South’s

opening club bidwasstrong and

artificial, and North’sdoubleof

one heartshowedsomevalues,

afterwhich the biddingfollowed

normallines.

NickNickell,West,leda heart,

taken in dummy by the queen.

Declarer thenled the jackof

spades, and Nickell madewhat

provedtobethekey play, allow-

ing the jackto hold.South then

repeated the finesse,whereupon

Nickell wonwith theking and

returned a thirdspade toSouth’s

ace, establishing twospadewin-

nersforEast.

Declarer couldstillhave got-

ten homesafely had he elected

to play Eastfor the ace ofclubs,

butheinstead triedfor hisninth

trickbyleading a heart. Nickell

rosewith the ace andshifted to a

club, and East’sace and two good

spadesputSouth down one.

While Nickell should be given

fullcreditfor his finedefence,

thefact remainsthat declarer

had onlyhimselfto blamefor

the outcome.

After thespade jackheldat

tricktwo, all South had to do

waslead a heart to establishhis

ninth trick.Westcouldtake the

ace or refuse it, ashe pleased,

but therewasnoway declarer

could be preventedfromscoring

twospades,twoheartsand five

diamondsfor hiscontract.

Given that theworldteam

championship isscored by In-

ternationalMatchPoints,which

putsapremiumon bidding and

making contracts, with over-

tricksoflittle consequence, it

mayseemsurprising that a play-

er at thislevelcouldmakesuch

amistake.
