The importance of
love from our friends

There’s one thing about breakups: nearly
everybody has been through one, which
means that chances are your friends will
be rushing to support you through your
heartache. Let them. Focus on this offering
of support and see how surrounded you are
by love and acceptance. Shared hardship can
help cement lasting bonds between friends.

How to love and
appreciate nature

Long walks helped me a lot after my breakup. It
was there on the coast—the sky before me a fresh
page, each cloud a letter—that I realized I could
write myself a new life. It highlighted how small my
grievances were on a grand scale, but it also struck
me how strong a force love could be if nurtured in the
right way. Nature can really help our mental health
during times when we’re struggling. E. O. Wilson calls
this connection to nature “biophilia” or “a love of life.”

Use your new solitary status to quietly reflect on the
world around you and fall in love with its natural
state.

How to love yourself

“Do not expect to receive the love from
someone else you do not give yourself... The
light of love is always in us, no matter how
cold the flame.”—Bell Hooks

We can deal with rejection in two ways. We
can see it as an assertion of all the negative
thoughts and insecurities we have about
ourselves and self-destruct, or we can use it
as an opportunity to regenerate. When we
take responsibility for what went wrong in a
relationship and deal with its consequences
without blaming ourselves too harshly, we
realize how we can adapt, change and grow.
This is where true self-love will blossom.

reakups are tough, and when it wasn’t your decision it’s easy to let the hurt and rejection embitter you
against love itself. However, love comes in many forms, and it helps to remind ourselves that romantic love,
while perhaps the most intoxicating, is just one type that we encounter in our lives. Sometimes a breakup
itself can be what opens the door to these other types of love and brings them to our attention.

How to support other
people when they need

Learn the lessons that heartbreak has to
teach and let them shape you in a positive
way. The next time a friend or relative
suffers the same thing, you can truly
empathize and offer meaningful advice.
