his death. However, upon Karl’s death in 1740, Maria Theresa
faced challenges to her rule: Austria lost Silesia in the Silesian
War, also known as the War of the Austrian Succession
(1740–48), and an attempt to regain it in the Seven Years
War (1756–63) was unsuccessful.
Holy Trinity columns were erected in towns all over Austria in the late 17th
century to give thanks for the end of the Plague epidemic.
