Franz Josef


Last great emperor of Austria, ruled from 1848 until his death
in 1916. The city of Vienna flourished during this time, but
the Austro-Hungarian Empire began to break apart under
his reign.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Beautiful wife of Franz Josef
who is still loved by the Austrians. Murdered in Switzerland
by an Italian anarchist.


Maria Theresa (1717–1780)


First female to rule the Austria-Hungarian Empire. She was
a respected and powerful leader.


Bruno Kreisky


Affectionately known as Emperor Bruno, Kreisky and his
Socialist Party ruled Austria from 1970 until 1983. He
instituted a number of liberal domestic reforms and increased
Austria’s role in international affairs.


Kurt Waldheim


Secretary General of the United Nations from 1972–1981 and
President of Austria from 1986–1992. Questions regarding
his participation in Nazi-era crimes caused controversy within
Austria and internationally.
