Culture Shock! Bolivia - A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette

Settling In 131

The custom of walling-in dwellings and using thick façades
for public buildings conceals some of the prettier parts of
every town—the interiors. When exploring for aesthetic
sights, by all means enter public buildings and peek into
private driveways as doors are being opened. You will be
treated to some of the best scenes in Bolivia: lush interior
gardens and elaborately designed mosaic patios with stone
fountains and archways. If you get lucky, you’ll discover
some great historic mural painting. And when in any Bolivian
city, you are within an hour, sometimes within minutes, of
unadulterated natural splendour.
These are some of the things you will need to know to settle
down in Bolivia. If one phrase could summarise the whole
settling in process, it would be to ‘expect the unexpected’
and keep yourself in an improvise mode, never losing track
of the basic harmony.
