to have a look. In line with the conservative nature of the
country, there are no topless beaches. This does not mean,
however, that you will not see any skimpy bikinis.
A couple of travel companies offer horseback riding tours
that begin at the base of the mountains on the outskirts
of Santiago. These tours are often a whole day affair and
include lunch in the wilderness. Moonlight horseback
riding tours (lunadas) are also available when there is a
full moon.
Wineries can be toured much more extensively than in
other wine-producing nations. Chileans will allow you to view
every step of the wine making process, which is especially
interesting at harvest time. There are many options north,
west and south of Santiago, including the Concha y Toro and
Santa Rita vineyards.
The Cajón del Maipo, a canyon just south of Santiago, is
a nice place to go for a Sunday drive. There are a number
of small towns, hostels, nice restaurants and swimming
pools. Many people go just to walk and enjoy the fresh air.
The Maipo River, which runs through the canyon, offers
rafting close to home.
Pomaire, about a 90-minute journey west of Santiago,
is known for its clay pottery. This pottery can be found
throughout Santiago, but Pomaire offers a better selection,
lower prices and a nice getaway for the day. Do not miss
the gigantic 1 kg (2 lb) empanadas.
There are a number of lakes nearby, the perfect
destination for a weekend trip. Rent a cabin or pitch a
tent and relax, fish or participate in any number of water
sports at Lago Rapel, Lago Vichuquén, Laguna Aculeo, or a
bit further to the south, Lago Colbún.
If you prefer to hike, national parks offer acres of
beautiful landscape. La Campana, 160 km (100 miles)
north of the capital is home to the beautiful Chilean palm
tree, which has almost disappeared. You can also climb
the challenging La Campana (the Bell) hill. East of Santiago
as you head up into the Andes is the Santuario de la
Naturaleza. This nature sanctuary is perfect for picnicking,
hiking or horseback riding.
