8 A.M. Tuck into a
hearty egg scramble
with hash browns at
First Street Haven
(360/457-0352 ),
a narrow diner with
a long counter and a
friendly hometown
feeling.
9 A.M. Cruise up
17 winding miles to
Olympic National
Park’s Hurricane
Ridge (nps.gov/
olym ), a spectacular
drive lined with mem-
orable vistas. (After
Oct 15, the road is
only open weekends,
so be sure to check
conditions first.)
From the visitor cen-
ter at 5,242 feet (get
your national park
passport stamped! ),
hike the 1-mile round-
trip High Ridge Trail
for views of glacier-
clad Mt. Olympus
and the Strait of Juan
de Fuca.
1 P.M. Mountain
treks work up an ap-
petite, so head back
into town for fish
tacos at the casual
Next Door Gastro-
pub (nextdoorgastro
pub.com ). Snag a
wooden booth for
live music on Sun-
days, or relax with
draft ales and craft
cocktails any day
of the week.
2 P.M. If you packed
light and the weather
turns cold and driz-
zly, First Street has
you covered. Pop
into Moss (360/797-
1401 ) for lumberjack
plaids, cozy fleeces,
and sturdy thermoses,
while Scout & Merc.
(360/477-0715 ),
just off the main
drag, has vintage
threads and Pendle-
ton button-ups. For
antiques and collect-
ibles , Brocante
(360/452-6322 ) is
a wall-to-wall gold
mine of hidden gems.
4 P.M. Time for an
afternoon pick-me-
up. Locals gather at
Bada NW (bada-nw.
com ) to chat or work
at their laptops. Or-
der from a menu of
drinks with inventive
logging-themed
names—Bull of the
Woods is a triple
Americano with
cream —and splurge
on decadent in-house
baked goods.
5 P.M. Head a few
miles west on U.S.
101 to witness the
magnificent 45-mile-
long Elwha River. Af-
ter the demolition of
two nearly century-
old dams, it flows
uninterrupted for the
first time in genera-
tions. If weather al-
lows, hunker down
at the river mouth for
a glorious sunset to
match the fall foliage.
7 P.M. Treat yourself
to Sequim Bay oys-
ters , smoked salmon
chowder , or grilled
halibut in the wood-
paneled dining rooms
of Kokopelli Grill
(kokopelli-grill.com ).
The owners once
lived in Texas , so ex-
pect some Southwest
spice with the best
of the Northwest’s
bounty.
