NEW ART GALLERY
Almost eight decades a er construction began,
the world’s largest digital art centre is set to open in the
French ci of Bordeaux. Not that the builders who drew the
first blueprints had any such intention. A German and Italian
submarine base in WWII, the structure was brutal both in its design
and purpose. Today it has been repurposed as the Bassins de Lumières,
set to open on 17 April, with exhibitions including artworks projected onto the
walls of the old U-boat docks. It’s hard to think of an artist whose s le shows a
greater contrast to this uncompromising space than Gustav Klimt. e concrete now
acts a canvas for the dazzling gold and rich details of paintings such as Portrait of Adele
Bloch-Bauer I (seen here on the le ) – the subject of a famous case about the legacy of Nazi art
plunder, and now reflected serenely in the rippling waters. £12; bassins - lumieres.com
