and writing. After years of sitting in front of the computer without
taking proper care of my back, my body made sure to send me the
bill for those long days! In the last few months, I haven’t been able
to sit for long periods of time, and then I hurt my back severely in
a bowling incident, and things got way worse. As a single mom
and business owner, I knew I couldn’t take much downtime, so
I started looking for alternatives that could ease my back pain while
working, and that’s how I came across Autonomous.
Autonomous is a company that specializes in making smart,
productivity-hacking products that are functional and have a min-
imalistic design. They have a fantastic line of office products that
go from standing desks, working chairs, accessories, and even mat-
tresses. I bought a SmartDesk 2 Home Office standing desk. The
SmartDesk 2 is motorized, with a very silent, dual-motor system
that’s capable of lifting up to 300 lbs. You can program four height
settings, or you can use the arrows to lift and lower it. The top and
frame of the desk can be customized with different options, from
plain black to walnut or bamboo tops. And, it’s really easy to assem-
ble. It only took me about 20 minutes to put it together by myself.
It’s known that sitting for extended periods of time increases the
risk of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, high
blood sugar, obesity and, of course, back problems. Standing desks
can make a significant improvement not only to your body but also
to mental performance. I make sure to change my desk height sev-
eral times during the day, from a standing position to several lower
positions that allow me to sit at different heights, and thus put less
