REMINDER OF AFRICA’S
COLONIAL PAST

With thriving design schools, such as the Michaelis School of
Fine Art, and a booming gallery scene, sparked by the opening
of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in 2O17, Cape
Town has become the art capital every collector is talking
about. The Goodman Gallery, initially based in Cape Town
and Johannesburg, was pivotal in shaping this movement – and has opened a London outpost. There, you’ll
find Frieze-winning artist Kapwani Kiwanga’s work, which reflects on Africa’s colonial history (7 April to 9 May).
Next up, Johannesburg-born Zanele Muholi presents 26O dramatic black and white photos at London’s
Tate Modern (29 April to 18 October), including their acclaimed series of self-portraits designed to celebrate
individuality. South African artist Candice Breitz’s Love Story comes to Tate Liverpool (9 April to 7 June), featuring
actors Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin performing fragments of real interviews by six refugees. The piece
went viral after it was created in 2O16, and was chosen to represent South Africa at the 2O17 Venice Biennale.
