IN MICHAEL CHABON’S The Amazing
Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay, arguably
the author’s greatest work to date, a young
refugee from Prague and his New Yorker
cousin create The Escapist, a comic book
superhero who faces up against the fascists
and stands up for what’s right, rescuing the
people who need his help the most.
In Robert A Heinlein’s Starship Troopers,
possibly the author’s best known and

sense of self and embracing his status as a
heavily-armed Roughneck.
One is a sensitive, heartfelt story of two
men growing up and learning to accept
themselves that doubles as a loving tribute
to the founders of the great comic book
characters, the other is an action-packed
and undeniably infl uential military SF that’s
routinely discussed as a work of fascist
fi ction with thinly veiled concerns about the
rise of communism and America’s perceived
moral decline.
These two novels could hardly seem
further apart, but they’re both key texts

and they have both been selected by The
Folio Society for beautiful new editions.
The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And
Clay features an introduction by Michael
Moorcock and stunning illustrations by
Eisner-winning artist Chris Samnee, and
Starship Troopers is illustrated by Hugo-
winner Stephen Hickman and is introduced
by The Forever War author Joe Haldeman.
It seems like an apt time to revisit these
two classic novels which follow characters
responding to horrors in such different ways,
and, as you can see, these new editions
certainly do the stories justice.
