I recentlypackedupmywatercolorsandwenttovisita friendonSanibelIsland,Fla.TopreventfatiguewhenI’msketchingen

pleinair,I selecta smallsetofartmaterialstocarrywithme.I findthatthelimitedchoicespeedsupthepaintingprocess.

SanibelIsland’swestcoastlineisa gentlecombination

ofseaandsand,soI decidedtofocusona nearby

beach.I beganbydrawingthreepalmtreesanda kayakon

buff-coloredpaper.

I paintedthepalmtreesinthedistanceusingburnt

sienna,ultramarineblueandwhite.ThenI appliedthe

horizontalstrips.I useda mixtureofFrenchultramarine,

caputmortuumvioletandwhitefortheocean.Onthe

kayak,I addedlemonyellowandviridian.Forthewet

beach,I createda mixturefromthesamecolorsusedfor

theoceanandkayak.

I paintedtheskyinceruleanblue,

whiteandivoryblack.NextI

indicatedshadowsanda lifejacketon

thekayak,usingburntsiennaand

ultramarine.Torendertheluminous

hullofthekayak,I covereditssides

withloosestrokesofa Day-Gloyellow

Sharpiegelhighlighter.I paintedthe

topofthekayakwiththeblueand

whitecolorsoftheskyit reflects.
