First, I toned the linen with the average color
and value of the flesh in the light—without
highlights, half-tones or shadows.

I established the darkest dark, lightest light
and sharpest edge, and then I started putting
in the background color.

I finished the background, including the hair
and clothing, and started on the shadow pattern.

I finished the shadow pattern, halftones and
highlights, paying attention to the variety of
edges as Zorn had painted them.
