PEOPLEchildren were employed almost entirely as domestic labor, including
some cloth production, in the households of the new elite of the gar-
rison cities. The new groups in early Islamic Iraq, the Indians and east
Africans, provided labor for new agricultural enterprises that spread
new crops and new techniques.
