Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the
wife of Prime Minister Justin Tru-
deau, has tested positive for the
new coronavirus and the couple
are isolating themselves for at
least 14 days.
The Prime Minister’s Office
said late Thursday that Ms. Gré-
goire Trudeau was feeling well
and will remain in isolation for
the time being.
Mr. Trudeau’s office said he
would continue to fully assume
his duties, working remotely,
adding he is exhibiting no symp-
toms. Based on doctor’s advice,
Mr. Trudeau can continue daily
activities and he spent the day in
telephone briefings, a statement
from deputy director of commu-
nications Chantal Gagnon said.
He is not being tested for the
virus at this time. Ms. Grégoire
Trudeau began exhibiting mild
flu-like symptoms on Wednes-
day, Mr. Trudeau’s office said.
“I’d like to say a big thank you
to all of you who have reached
out to me asking how I’m doing,”
Ms. Grégoire Trudeau said in a
statement.

Canadian stocks plunged Thurs-
day, with the benchmark index
suffering its biggest one-day loss
since 1940 and closing at the low-
est level in four years, as fear en-
veloped trading desks worldwide
over the economic toll of the
growing coronavirus crisis.
The S&P/TSX Composite
plummeted 1,761.64 points, or
12.34 per cent, to 12,508.45 with
every sector in the red.
Since the index’s peak on Feb.
20, $830-billion of market value
has now been wiped out in Cana-
da.
The impulse to sell left few
safe havens; even gold and bit-
coin tumbled.
The energy sector was blood-
ied again, with the U.S. crude
price falling 6 per cent.
Not since May, 1940, the
month when Germany invaded
France during the Second World
War, has the Canadian stock
market had a greater loss on a
percentage basis in one day.
The losses in Canada on
Thursday even outpaced Wall
Street.

Ontario closed its schools and suspended
jury trials, B.C. advised against foreign
travel, several provinces banned large
gatherings and most of North America’s
professional sports leagues shut down as
the response to the spread of COVID-19 es-
calated with awave of restrictive measures
Thursday.
Dozens of cancellations and postpone-
ments were announced as organizers of
awards shows, conferences and political
campaigns concluded that large gather-
ings can no longer safely go ahead.
TheNationalHockeyLeaguesuspended
its season, putting hundreds of employees
in limbo, as did Major League Baseball and
Major League Soccer, a day after the Na-
tional Basketball Association’s suspen-
sion. St. Patrick’s Day and Vaisakhi Day pa-
rades were called off, and candidates for
the Conservative Party leadership can-
celled events.
“These are extraordinary times and we
have to take every measure possible,” fed-
eral Health Minister Patty Hajdu said

Thursday, calling COVID-19 “an unprece-
dented public health crisis.”
Ms. Hajdu said Canadians should con-
siderstayinghomeduringtheMarchbreak
period to help stall the progress of the dis-
ease. B.C. went a step further, as Public
Health Officer Bonnie Henry strongly ad-
vised against all travel, even to the United
States.
Public health experts describe many of
these steps as social distancing measures.
Their purpose is to reduce contact with
others and slow the speed of transmission.
Officials hope that such measures will
ward off a spike in coronavirus cases and
thereby prevent the health system from
being overwhelmed. But the decisions on
what to close and what to keep open vary
wildly across the country.
The city of Montreal said it will close
pools, arenas and libraries while schools
remain open. In Ontario, schools will be
closed for three weeks but public services
remain open, as do most universities. Offi-
cials said the risk of transmission remains
low, despite the total number of COVID-
cases rising to more than 140.
