Kneel before Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) – King Arthur’s nephew and

youngest Knight of the Round Table. Stoically sitting on thrones

was all the rage before Netflix.

On Gawain’s quest he meets Lady Bertilak (Alicia Vikander),

who’s always accompanied by a crone and quickly takes a liking

to the renowned knight.

With the Green Knight’s axe in hand, and a fox gifted by Bertilak,

Gawain is prepared for most dangers – but giants the size of

mountains are another matter entirely.

Keen to impress Arthur (Sean Harris) and Queen Guinevere

(Kate Dickie), Gawain accepts the Green Knight’s (Ralph Ineson)

challenge. It doesn’t go as expected...

So too does Lord Bertilak (Joel Edgerton), who allows Gawain to stay

in his castle en route to the Green Chapel, where Gawain will again

confront the emerald creature.

There are hints of the Faun from Pan’s Labyrinth to the design of

the Green Knight itself. If Lowery’s similarly adult fantasy is half

as good as that del Toro classic, we’re in for a treat. JF
