KEV AND OUR ‘ENRY
Kevin Keegan was probably British football’s
first superstar and so was a prime target
for television companies wanting him to be
associated with their brands.
At the height of his Seventies stardom he
joined forces with boxing ace Henry Cooper
for an advert to promote Brut 33 deodorant.
The pair are filmed undergoing a rigorous
workout before Henry asks ‘Mighty Mouse’:
“Are you trying to muscle in on my act? “Kev
replies: “Yeah, why don’t you throw in the
towel, Henry?”
Keegan was also recruited
for a public-
information
film about the
Green Cross
Code, explaining
to a young lad
how to cross
the road safely
in the streets
around Anfield.
FAIR DINKUM
An Eighties commercial promoting
Australian beer Tooheys. Then Reds
midfielder Craig Johnston is shown
running around the streets of Liverpool
in all weathers to the backdrop of a
ditty performed by an Australian singer
containing lyrics such as, “At his feet the
ball is magic and he trips the light fantastic,
and it’s not just any fool who can play for
Liverpool” accompanied by footage of some
of his best
moments in a
red shirt.
After
expending
such energy,
‘Johnno’
relaxes at the
end of the day
with a thirst-
quenching
bottle of
Tooheys while
wearing an LFC
sweatshirt.
JASON’S HAIR-RAISING EXPERIENCE
Jason McAteer received plenty of stick from his team-mates for his 1997 advert for an anti-
dandruff shampoo from the Vidal Sassoon salon range.
Jason knows you can have it all,” says the voiceover as the Irish international is shown
whimsically throwing a ball in the air and running his hands through his flowing locks.
