Opposite-page left is a Reds team shot from
October 1969 in Football Supporter, a time when
Shankly’s Liverpool were in transition (young Emlyn
Hughes sits next to veteran St John, for instance),
and below an interview in the same magazine the
following November with forward Bobby Graham,
struggling to play regularly: “No player could
have a better challenge than to fight for a place in
Liverpool’s first team. The snag is that the standard
is so high, it’s not purely a question of waiting for
someone to go off-form – they rarely do.”
Below, a June 1970 feature in Striker (out every
Monday, price ‘ninepence’) discussing Liverpool’s
search for new strikers to succeed Roger Hunt
and Ian St John. “Their fanatical followers want
honour and glory. They know that while Liverpool
can continue in the nation’s top six, always among
the contenders, they are unlikely to win another
major trophy until they find another tall, strong
goalscorer.” Enter John Toshack, the tall one, in
November that year, and Kevin Keegan, the strong,
explosively exciting one, the following August.
