Pavanetto, head of the
production department,
explains: “We wore different
hats in the various phases of the
project. During the theatre’s
design and construction, we
managed the design and
engineering process and its
coordination with the main
contractor; during construction,
we supervised the worksite,
ensuring coordination between
all those involved. For the
concerts, we were in charge of
event and venue management.”
On the project’s complexity,
he adds: “Al-Ula’s position did
complicate the situation. With
the nearest city almost 200
miles away and few connections
in spite of the local airport, the
majority of the technical
materials arrived from Dubai or
Europe. But in the end, we
created a theatre in the desert
from scratch, in an area that
aims at becoming the country’s
cultural hub and opening up to
tourism.”Maraya’s AVL design was
also handled by Black DWC-
LLC, and the key members of
the team of resident AVL
technicians are all Italian. They
include sound engineer Paolo
‘Red’ Talami, who describes the
standard L-Acoustics sound
system set-up at the venue:
“Each main side cluster is
formed by eight K2 and three
Kara speakers with two LA-RAK
II amplifiers, each containing
three LA12X amplified
controllers. The centre cluster
consists of eight K2 and three
Kara with two LA-RAK II. Side-fill
chores are delegated to eight
Kara and six SB18 subwoofers,
with an LA-RAK II. Installed on
the floor stagefront are 20 SB28
subs, with 10 X12 on front-fill
duty and three LA-RAK II amps.
On-stage, artists have at their
disposal six X15;16 X8; 32 X12,
and two SB18, all powered and
controlled by an LA-RAK II”.WINTER AT TANTORA
Winter at Tantora Festival’s
2019/20 edition - which ran from
December to March - featureda number of well-known
international names, including
Kool & The Gang, Lionel Richie,
Jose Carreras, Andrea Bocelli

a new show, Jamil and
Bouthayna Love Legend from
the Oasis of Al-Ula, was
commissioned by the RCU for
the festival and performed for
three nights by Caracalla Dance
Theatre.

famous venues worldwide,
including at New York’s
Carnegie Hall, Sadler’s Wells
and the Coliseum in London,
and Théâtre des Champs
Élysées in Paris.
At Maraya, the Lebanese
company staged the new
production of Jamil and
Bouthayna, a Middle Eastern
version of Romeo and Juliet.
