where we needed to be. This
finally allowed the contract to be
awarded just before Christmas
2018.”
He continues: “It was a long
journey during which there
were weekly conversations with
Stage Electrics. I have worked
in a number of venues that had
Stage Electrics installations in
them, and I was always very
impressed with the quality of the
metalwork and the installation,
so it really was a no-brainer to
approach them at an early stage
to bid for the work. We went to
other companies as well, but
after market-testing, we were
sure that theirs was the best
offering.”
Ginge Ames, operations
manager for Riverside TV
Studios, adds: “We have had
a lot of really positive feedback
about the quality of the
installation, particularly the
stuff the audience and camera
never sees. All the visiting
professionals have remarked on
how neat all the cabling is and
how well laid-out things are. The
project was very challenging,
and we’ve all had to adapt and
overcome in several areas,
which the Stage Electrics guys
have consistently done.”
Reflecting on the use of the
Studios, Stewart says: “We
have production companies
coming in doing site visits all
the time. They initially look at
the studio, but when they realise
that we have facilities to record
throughout the building, full
sound and lighting in the foyer
area and the event space at the
end, their brains start ticking
over and they look at how they
can expand and use the whole
place as a performance space.”
Stewart sums up his
working relationship with Stage
Electrics throughout the lengthy
refurbishment period: “I think
we’ve worked extremely well
together. There has never been
a moment when we haven’t
been able to talk through and
resolve issues in front of us,
and obviously, in a construction
project of this size, there are no
end of them to deal with. We
have tackled them all together
and it has been, honestly,
flawless. It was also a very
collaborative way of working with
Stage Electrics to find savings
when the opportunity arose but
not damage the end product.
“Their project management
has been superb, as has Lee
Darvill, Stage Electrics’ site
supervisor. The company’s
breadth of experience working
within theatres and TV and
event spaces was also very
valuable to this project because
that wasn’t available from any
other partners. The relationship
we have had with them, and
with ATG Danmon has been
the closest because what we’ve
done with them has been much
more about how the spaces will
operate as production venues -
ultimately, that is what sells this
building and this facility.”
Studio 1 was christened by
Richard Osman’s World Cup of
the Decade and the BRIT Award
nominations before doing its
first live broadcast when it
hosted Channel 4’s Alternative
Election Night coverage in
December. Meanwhile, Studio
3 has just completed a run of
Ingmar Bergman’s Persona
and Love, Loss & Chianti.
Construction works in Studio 2
is expected to complete soon. I
