“This is a resilient industry and it’s been encouraging

and heart-warming to see people pull together and

mobilise with offers of support.. .”

C

Well, what a year the past month
has been! The world has all-but
shut down in a bid to stop the
spread and ‘flatten the curve’ of the invisible
enemy that is the coronavirus. Very few
industries have been unaffected by the
unprecedented global events we’ve all
experienced over the past few weeks - and
sadly, ours has been one of the hardest hit.
Whilst this has been incredibly
concerning and heart-breaking to witness,
this is a resilient industry and it’s been
equally as encouraging and heart-warming
to see people pull together and mobilise
with offers of support - for each other
and the wider world. From friendly online
pub quizzes, free theatrical broadcasts,
Facebook groups and resource hubs, to
initiatives involving putting the unique
skillset and can-do attitude associated
with live event production to use assisting
healthcare workers and scientists - the
effort is incredibly admirable and we salute
you! For more on the industry’s fight against
the coronavirus, see our special extended
coverage on pages 16-...
Many of our regular columnists have
also chosen to focus on the current global
situation this month, with Roland Hemming
advising anyone interested in making the
switch from live audio engineering to install
sound in his column, Second Fix (page 52)
and James Eade revealing how the skills
he’s gained in the live events sector have
seen him now become a Key Worker under

the Civil Contingencies Act - read more
in his column, The Conductor (page 72).
Meanwhile, in the absence of our usual
tradeshow coverage, we also present
a round-up of some of the latest product
releases that have hit the market this Spring
(pages 40-45).
Also inside, and hopefully providing
some much-needed escapism for you, we
bring you Kate Lyon’s detailed report on the
production wizardry at work for Mamma
Mia! The Party (pages 66-71). An immersive
theatrical dining experience based on
the popular ABBA-inspired musical and
films, MM!TP sees part of London’s O
transformed into a Greek taverna where
the story unfolds throughout the night.
With familiar tunes, good food and industry
heavyweights Patrick Woodroffe and Gareth
Owen at the helm of the lighting and sound
set-up, it’s no wonder it’s been such a hit
with punters.
BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter
Lewis Capaldi had a busy start to the year
as he set off on his first arena tour. Steve
Moles caught up with his crew as they
prepared for Capaldi’s homecoming show
at Glasgow’s SSE Arena (pages 54-61).
And in case anyone was in any doubt, all
live events and productions covered in this
issue took place prior to current government
guidelines. Stay safe - and let’s keep our
fingers crossed that this dreadful pandemic
passes as quickly as it arrived and that we
can all return to some form of normality. I
