NI: What can lighting design do for an inte-
rior space?
Orsman: Lighting is the first component that
differentiates residential, hospitality, and com-
mercial spaces. Once we identify our space with
particular fixtures and brightness, we then work

to minutely understand the area we are illuminat-
ing: Is it task-driven, such as a kitchen or gallery?
Is it leisure-driven, such as a living or music room?
Or, is it intimate, such as a bedroom or spa? This
determines whether we use high hats, dome
lighting, under-cabinet lighting, recessed, or any of

the many other options we have on hand. When
we add dimmers, we then have an exponentially
higher [degree] of control. Bright, purposeful
kitchens can transition to calming cocktail spaces,
and home theaters can go from casual television
watching to multidimensional viewing areas.
