Q

When we sync our iPhones
to transfer music using iTunes,
it insists on copying across
everything we’ve purchased from the
iTunes Store. How can we stop that?
by JIM BRUCE

A

iTunes, and its successor features
built into Catalina’s Finder, don’t
actually copy across all purchased
music tracks when you sync your iPhones.
When synchronising locally stored tracks
which haven’t been purchased from the iTunes
Store, you’ll find that each track is copied
across, otherwise your iPhones would not

be able to access them. Those therefore
occupy space on those devices.
This works differently for tracks which
you have purchased from the iTunes Store
on your current Apple account. As they can
be downloaded from iCloud at any time, iTunes
or the Finder copy across account information
rather than the tracks themselves. This is the
only way that your iPhones can access any
of those tracks which you have purchased.
As your account data takes very little
space, and without it those iPhones couldn’t
access all your purchased music, it takes
almost no storage space, and you can
download those tracks whenever you wish.

How to update

Q

Is there an address book
compatible with Catalina
which will allow me free-form
printing to make a proper paper
address book, and will print labels?
bY ROY MILLINGTON

A

Apple’s Contacts app provides
a narrow range of printing
options which support
many label sizes, but only limited
custom layouts. Even if you arrive
at a suitable choice of fields and
layout, Contacts is unable to save
those settings. So every time you
wanted to print an address book,

you’d have to set it up from scratch.
To lay details out for a printed address
book you’ll need to use another app.
A perfect solution for many was
FileMaker’s app Bento, but this was
discontinued long ago, and won’t run
in recent versions of macOS such as

Catalina. Its replacement is the
database app FileMaker Pro, which
may seem like overkill, and certainly
is expensive, but can be used to design
almost any type of output you might
require, as will other good databases.
Most of the older address book
apps which supported freeform output
and labels have been discontinued
due to falling demand. A more
accessible database which is
popular for advanced address
book and other features is Tap
Forms Organizer 5, from the App
Store. It’s not free by any means,
but could prove your best solution.

Stop syncing purchased music

You can create layouts to print from Contacts,
but it’s impossible to save a layout for reuse.

Music you’ve bought from the
iTunes Store isn’t copied during
syncing, but is made available
through your account information.
