Edit locations
The Browse options also enable
you to connect to a networked server
such as a media server, or to edit and
re–order the list of locations and tags
that appears in the Sidebar at the left
of the window. Tap Done to finish.
See your stuff
At first glance, Files doesn’t look
any different from before. It opens in
Recents view, which shows you the most
recently used files in your iCloud Drive.
You’ll see there’s also a Browse option
at the bottom of the screen.
Explore the options
Long–pressing on a file or
folder brings up the actions that you
can use on it, with file operations such
as copying and moving; tagging or
favoriting; downloading if it’s in the
cloud; or just copying a link for sharing.
Make your own
Apps have been able to make
their own folders for ages, and now you
can join in the fun. To create a new
folder, long–press in a blank bit of the
main screen to see three options: New
Folder, Scan Documents, and Info.
See all your storage
When you tap Browse you’ll get
this view, with a sidebar showing all
your available locations — including
attached drives and any cloud storage
options — and the main window showing
you the currently selected folder.
Move it around
If you select the Move option,
you’ll now be able to scroll through the
available folders, just as if you were
moving a message in Mail. It’s quite
a long list if you have a lot of apps
installed on your iPhone or iPad.
Zip it up
You can easily compress
multiple files, creating a compact .zip
file that’s better for sending or sharing.
Select the files by tapping Select in the
top–right corner, then tap each file so
a check appears. Tap More > Compress.
Name your folder
If you tap on New Folder you’ll
be taken to this really rather large field
where you can give it a descriptive
name. Type whatever you want to call
your folder, or use the little “x” icon if
you need to clear the whole field.
Scan directly
to Files
iOS’s document scanner is now in Files,
so you can scan without having to
launch a third–party scanner or camera
app. Tap on the three dots to the right
of Browse and select Scan Documents.
