irrorless cameras, and
particularly the full-frame
models, have dominated the
conversation in the camera-
buying community over the
last couple of years. But a couple of full-
frame cameras we test this issue might
mark the point where the DSLR reasserts
itself in the minds of camera buyers.
First off is the Nikon D780, which looks
the same as the popular D750 but has
one crucial difference among the many
improvements on its predecessor. The
convention is that mirrorless cameras
have fast on-sensor Live View autofocus,
while DSLRs are more sluggish. Canon has
challenged this perception in several recent
DSLR models; now Nikon is addressing it
too in the D780, making the choice between
DSLR and mirrorless more nuanced.
Then there’s Canon’s new high-end pro
model, the EOS-1D Mark III. This is no simple
updating of a respected camera: it’s a radical
upgrade, with a new image file format to take
on JPEG, a new memory card standard,
a new controller and a new autofocus
technology. It’s one of the most exciting
models we’ll see this year. Rod Lawton
