format that come straight from
the camera’s imaging chip,
and are not subjected to any
in-camera processing. In a
JPEG, which is the other common file format
cameras use, all the building blocks that make
up an image – like colour, contrast and
sharpness – are ‘fixed’ when you take the shot;
but in a raw, they’re floating values, and can be
adjusted later to change the look of the photo.
Raw converters like Camera Raw or
Lightroom allow you to adjust all the core
values that create the look of a picture – but
with hundreds of sliders, settings and tools,
and a near-infinite array of possible outcomes,
it’s not always easy to know where to start!
Presets offer a great solution to the agony of
choice that a raw converter presents. Not only
are they extremely quick to use when you want
fast results, but they also serve up an inspiring
range of options for new ideas. Any image can
be presented in different ways; presets let you
